The world production for avocado is around 3 million metric tons. Kenya exports about 10,000 metric tons (4%) and is ranked the 6th producer after Mexico, Chile, South Africa, Israel and Spain. International demand for avocado has been on the rise for the last two decades fueled by aggressive marketing owing to the nutritional benefits of the avocado.
Kenya’s climatic and ecological zone provides a unique export window since our avocadoes come into season (March-Sept) when another players crop is off season. Avocado therefore presents an opportunity for improving the livelihoods of the small -scale farmers in this county.
